Throw a frog into a pot of boiling water
He will jump right out.
Throw a frog into a pot of lukewarm water,
Slowly raise the heat
He will stay in and cook to death.
Throw a Catholic into a pagan environment
He will see the lies and ambiguities clearly.
Throw a Catholic into a polite society,
Slowly change the standards and values
He will stay silent and slowly die
spiritually

Our big mistake in the Catholic Church in America was the madness of trying to be like everybody else for the past 200 years. This has resulted in an epic failure to be the light of Christ to an ever self-indulgent society. It’s been especially bad these last 50 years because the bishops have meddled in politics instead of teaching the Faith unequivocally and leaving the public square to the laity.
