Teresa of Avila understood that humour helps us cope with difficult situations. Supposedly after a donkey threw her into a cold stream, Teresa stood in her heavy, dripping wet, medieval habit and yelled at God,
“If this is the way You treat Your friends, no wonder You have so few”
A word of wisdom from St. Teresa for when we are crying over unanswered prayers
“There are more tears shed over answered prayers than over unanswered prayers.” St. Teresa
“Pray, Hope, and Don’t Worry” -St. Pio of Pietrelcino
“All the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light of a single candle.”-St. Francis
“Tribulation is a gift from God – one that he especially gives His special friends.”
-St. Thomas More
The Therese, the Little Flower, humbly thought of herself as little, a nobody, but God gave her wise pearls of wisdom,
“Jesus may hide Himself, but we now He is there”

The great teacher of contemplation himself tells us not to be afraid of the darkness,
“If a man wishes to be sure of the road he treads on,he must close his eyes and walk in the dark.” -St. John of the Cross
Gentle consolation from a woman who suffered through the Black Plague during the middle ages as she nursed the sick.
I love these quotes, they are so encouraging. The ones from Saint Francis, and Saint Thomas Moore are especially beautiful. There is an incredible depth there.
