Carlo Maderno designed for St Peter’s a façade just below the dome designed by Michelangelo adding 13 large statues on its top. Jesus with eleven apostles and St. John the Baptist. The missing apostle, St. Peter, holding the key, is in the square very near the façade.

In 1657 Gian Lorenzo Bernini completed the design of Piazza S. Pietro with 90 statues of saints at the top the colonnade.There are now 140.
The statues were smaller in size than the coats of arms of Pope Alexander VII (1655-67) which marked the center and the ends of the colonnades to celebrate the ceremonies of canonization which creates new saints.
